In 1902, the SS Ventnor sank off the Hokianga coast, carrying the remains of nearly 500 Chinese goldminers bound for their homeland in Guangdong, China. For over 120 years, their story has remained unfinished.
We are honoured to work with Duncan Sew Hoy, great-grandson of Choie Sew Hoy, who led the original repatriation effort - a mission cut short when the Ventnor sank, taking him too. Partnering with his descendants today honours that legal and moral commitment, closing a 120-year chapter of history.
The SS Ventnor Society exists to promote awareness and remembrance of the Ventnor and its passengers through education, memorialisation, and public reporting. The Society raises and manages funds transparently to support cultural, historical, and forensic efforts - including the ongoing work to recover and, if possible, repatriate the remains of the Chinese goldminers.
Working alongside heritage, archaeological, and community partners, the Society is committed to delivering a respectful and dignified remembrance that bridges New Zealand and China through shared history.Frequently Asked Questions
